Laparoscopic Low Anterior Resection

Resection is a surgical procedure performed to remove a part or the entire organ from the body. Low anterior resection is the removal of a part of the intestine that is damaged due to various reasons. At Kims hospital, we perform minimally invasive laparoscopic low anterior resection to remove a damaged, blocked or infected segment of the intestine from the body.

Laparoscopic low anterior resection procedure

During the laparoscopic resection surgery, the surgeon begins the surgery by administering a dose of general anesthesia to relax the muscles and to put the patient in a sleep-like state. The surgeon makes few small incisions in the lower abdomen wall and the abdomen is inflated with air to get a clear view of the internal cavity and organs. A laparoscope is inserted through the incision (a thin long device that has a camera attached to its end and connected to a monitor). The enlarged images of the internal organ and the internal cavity of the abdomen captured from the camera guides the surgeon throughout the procedure. After the investigation, the surgeon inserts few surgical tools to remove the affected or infected intestinal segment and reconnects the new ends of the intestines and staples together.

In some cases, the reconnection of new ends may not be possible. In such instances, a portion of the intestine is brought to the abdominal area to forms an opening called as a stoma. The stoma is attached to the abdominal wall and acts as an external pouch to collect the waste materials that are discharged from the body. After the formation of a stoma, the removal of feces is rerouted to the stoma and not through the anus. Laparoscopic low anterior resection surgery lasts for 1 to 4 hours and is performed to treat various medical conditions that affect the intestine and these include:

  • Block in the intestine caused by scar tissues or tumors
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Ulcers
  • Intestinal Cancer
