Piles

Piles or Hemorrhoids is a condition that occurs around the anus or in the lower rectum due to swollen veins. Many factors lead to the swelling of veins in the internal or external area around the anus. Piles are common in old aged people and are very troublesome causing pain and difficulty sitting. Formation of a clot in a hemorrhoid (thrombosed hemorrhoid) causes extreme pain and required to be pierced and drained.

Causes of hemorrhoids

Factors that lead to the development of hemorrhoids include:

  • Excess strain during a bowel movement
  • Chronic constipation or diarrhea
  • Sitting for a long period of time
  • Family history
  • Consistent heavy lifting
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy ( increases pressure on the veins)
  • Low fiber diet
  • Anal intercourse

Diagnosing hemorrhoids

The doctor conducts a physical exam and checks the anus for any abnormalities. Different test performed include a digital rectum test and sigmoidoscopy. Sigmoidoscpy is performed using a small fiber-optic camera to diagnose an internal hemorrhoid.

Treatment options for hemorrhoids

Most hemorrhoids can be treated with medication and simple methods. The doctor prescribes medication to get relief from the pain caused by the hemorrhoids. Other methods include ointment or cream to ease the burning and itching sensation and soaking the area in a warm tub of water or cold compress for at least 10 minutes every day helps reduce the swelling and pain in the anal area. Taking fiber supplements or adapting fiber rich diet helps relieve constipation and reduce stress during bowel movement. Good dietary fiber sources include whole wheat, brown rice, oatmeal, pears, carrots, buckwheat and bran. Proper hygiene of the anal area has to be maintained and avoid using harsh soaps and dry toilet papers as they may irritate the area.
Minimally invasive treatment methods to treat hemorrhoids include:

  • Rubber band ligation: The procedure involves placing a rubber band around the hemorrhoid to cut off the blood circulation and forcing it to shrink.
  • Injection therapy: Injection therapy or sclerotherapy is another method to reduce the size of the hemorrhoids by injecting a chemical directly into the blood vessel of the hemorrhoid.
  • Coagulation: this method uses infrared or laser energy to harden and shrink small bleeding hemorrhoids.

Surgical methods to treat hemorrhoid includes:

  • Hemorrhoidectomy: During this procedure, the surgeon removes the hemorrhoids and is the most effective and comprehensive method to treat severe or persistent hemorrhoids.
  • Stapled hemorrhoidectomy: Hemorrhoid stapling blocks blood flow to hemorrhoid and is used only for internal hemorrhoids.

The doctor provides instruction to prevent the reoccurrence of hemorrhoids and these include:

  • Avoid straining during a bowel movement
  • Increase daily water intake to prevent the stool from hardening
  • Refrain from holding back if you feel a bowel movement coming
  • Exercise regularly to prevent
  • Don’t sit for long periods
  • Consuming foods that are high in dietary fiber
